What is Earned Value Management?

Earned Value Management is a project control process based on a structured approach to planning, cost collection and performance measurement. It facilitates the integration of project scope, time and cost objectives and the establishment of a baseline plan for performance measurement.
The establishment of a Performance Measurement Baseline (PMB) is essential to conducting successful EVM and consists of:

    • Defined scope and assumptions
    • Activities scheduled in logical sequence
    • Resources / costs (labour and materials)

How can I train for the Earned Value examinations?

Training for Earned Value Management is available from the network of Accredited Training organisations (ATOs) who are assessed and certified by APMG-International.

Do I have to receive training to sit the exam?

No, however this is recommended. In addition to receiving accredited training, individuals also have the option of self-study to prepare for the examinations.

How do I sit the exam?

Most, if not all, accredited training organisations include the examination as part of the associated training course.

How much does it cost to sit the Earned Value examination?

If you are sitting the examinations through an accredited training organisation, the cost of the exam is generally included in the course fee.

Are there any pre-requisites for the Earned Value examination?

There are no pre-requisites for the examination. However candidates are expected to have read the supporting publication “Earned Value Management APM guidelines 2008”. It is also strongly recommended that candidates have exposure to basic concepts in Earned Value Management and related work experience.

What is the main publication for Earned Value?

The Earned Value qualification scheme has one main supporting publication called “Earned Value Management APM guidelines 2008”.

Which languages is the Earned Value examination available in?

The Earned Value examination is currently only available in English. Further translations are considered based on demand.

How long will it take to learn the Earned Value material?

For individuals self-studying it is almost impossible to say. As all candidates have different experience and amount of time available for study, it varies from person to person. We suggest you buy the manual and have a look through for yourself before deciding how long you need to spend learning.
For those studying with an accredited training organisation, courses are generally delivered over 2 days. We recommend investigating with individual providers, as many will offer tailored and blended learning solutions.

What is the structure of the Earned Value examination?

The format of the Earned Value Management examination can be summarized as:

  • 40 Simple and Complex multiple-choice questions
  • 60 minutes duration
  • Closed-book
  • 26 correct answers out of 40 are required to pass (65%)
  • The exam is currently paper-based.

How long is the Earned Value qualification valid for?

The examination is not valid for a defined period and will not expire.

Are there plans to introduce a higher level qualification?

APMG-International do intend to develop a further qualification. The Practitioner level is currently under development and is likely to be launched in Q1 2011.

When can I expect the results of my Earned Value examination?

The examination is marked on location with provisional results provided immediately after marking.

When will I receive my certificate?

A certificate will be dispatched to successful candidates approximately 2 weeks after we have received your exam paper back into our offices.
Please note that if you have taken your examinations via an ATO, certificates are dispatched to ATOs. Therefore if you have not received your certificate shortly after the above time frames please contact your ATO directly.

What is the pass mark for the Earned Value examinations?

Candidates must achieve a score of 26/40 (65%) to pass.

Can I use the Earned Value logo?

The Earned Value logo may only be used with the permission of APMG-International. If APMG-International believe the logo is being used in an inappropriate manner, then we may insist that the logo is used in a suitable alternative manner or is withdrawn from use. All materials that contain the logo must be submitted to APMG-International for approval before publication.
